A captains chair is often thought of as a sea-faring themed piece of furniture due to its name, or a star trek captains chair, if one is a science fiction fan. It is mainly a chair with vertical support in a backrest, and arm rests for horizontal support.
Captains chairs are often made of wood, and can be used in settings located in dining rooms and restaurants, or with a desk, to make a work station. In many dining room sets, you will find one or two captains chairs that sit at the ends of the table, and chairs without arms are used on the sides. Often you will find that in captains chairs, the top-line of the chair's back support is in line at the same height as the arm rests.
Recently, there have been chairs that are referred to as captains chairs, but their arm rests and back supports don't have the required two vertical supports. Chairs like these, with fabric shaped between the supports are more correctly called directors' chairs. The confusion with the names is caused because there is no exact definition of these types of chairs. Different companies that make these chairs may call them by different names. To add to the confusion, captains chairs now also can refer to a type of exercise equipment that is used to work the abdominal area and increase core strength through ab exercise. These are called captains chair exercises.
The price of a captains chair can vary from one retailer to the next, and from one fabric or leather type to the next, as well. The quality of the workmanship will add to the price, but many buyers would say that quality workmanship is worth paying extra for. Different prices can also reflect the different types of wood that can be used to make the chairs. The fabric and cushion type may also affect the price. You can even find vintage captains chairs that are quite ornate, at antique stores or sales.
Captains chairs have a fairly simple style of construction, and they have been widely used for centuries. The chair is very sturdy, thanks in part to its vertical support system. In older chairs, you may find no upholstery or cushioning at all, and this tends to fit with the more traditional type of captains chair.
Coleman, famous for its outdoor supplies, makes folding captains chairs that are handy for cookouts and camping trips. These have extra-tall backs to give you more support. The seating area is oversized, so you can easily find a comfortable position. You can even stretch your legs out, which makes them quite comfortable. The back and armrest are padded, for even more comfort, and the aluminum frame is easy to fold for travel, and rustproof, for long wear.
Outdoor companies have been creating sturdy captains chairs since the early 1900's. Innovative materials have helped make the pieces very popular with travelers and campers alike. There is nothing like a comfortable captains chair to relax in after a day of hiking or fishing. The outdoor-designed products usually have sand-bar legs that make the chair able to hold more weight, and they work better on soft ground than the traditional captains chair.
